In Poitou-Charentes, a wealthy and widespread heritage from Antiquity reveals itself to the attentive traveler: the Gallo-Roman site of Fâ near Royan, the Bouchauds theater in the vicinity of Rouillac, the Chassenon thermal baths, the Sanxay sanctuary not far from Poitiers and the Vieux-Poitiers site on the outskirts of Châtellerault.
The town of Saintes presents the most precious testimonies to its epoch with its Roman arch on the Charente shores, its Gallo-Roman amphitheater and its archeological museum.
While the Pyrenees and the Périgord regions are dotted with adorned grottos that constitute renowned masterpieces discovered long ago, many of the sites in Poitou-Charentes are closed to the public and consequently less widely known. Poitou-Charentes art is essentially engraved and sculpted, and it is in our region that such types of representation attained the heights of technical, iconographic and monumental perfection.
In Angles-sur-l’Anglin, Vienne, the sculpted Roc-aux-Sorciers frieze is a Magdalenian sculpture masterpiece of which there exists no equivalent in terms of the rare artistic quality and sheer scope of the work.
The 1979 discovery of the remains of Pierrette, a young Neanderthal woman, led to the creation of the interactive prehistoric center. The visitor will be cast back some 15 billion years: the time of the Big Bang! Indeed, this center of prehistory invites you to a confrontation with the Neanderthal man.
And there are new attractions: morphing, 3D; you will even be able to arm wrestle with your ancestors! Outside, children may invade a prehistoric hunters’ camp.
The paleo-site also includes the discovery of prehistoric animals and a number of spectacles on prehistoric themes.
